One of the most threatening challenges to our leadership is the struggle that wages within ourselves. As leaders, we must work for change, whether that be new goals, new problems to solve, or bringing people together to accomplish important feats, all of which destabilizes. At the same time, our followers require that we bring a sense of peace to the workplace. People want stability, predictability and an environment in which they can flourish. Successfully managing the resulting tension is the mark of an extraordinary leader accomplishing extraordinary results. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that most begin by focus on making change first, expecting others to naturally follow…and this is probably the wrong place to start. The truly extraordinary leader begins with creating that sense of peace first, as the foundation of trust and goodwill. Once that foundation is in place, people are more able and willing to work together for change that sustains over time. What has been your experience?
